Will Vaught claims MARS/UMP Challenge event; Schrader, Mosier & Fisher also take wins!

Will Vaught Ken Schrader Kevin Mosier Chris Fisher CLICK HERE FOR MORE PHOTOS FROM I-55 RACEWAY! Pevely, MO (August 29, 2009) Will Vaught from Crane, Missouri claimed the $5,000 winner's share of the MARS/UMP Challenge event at I-55 Raceway. Vaught topped the thirty-two car field of Super Late Models as he led all forty laps of the main event. Vaught started on the pole and battled early with Bryan Collins for the lead. Collins pressured Vaught for the first fifteen laps as he could pulled along side him through the corners on the low side, but couldn't successfully make the pass. Vaught would then open up a small lead over Collins, meanwhile Randy Korte had begun his charge through the field after starting tenth. Dennis Erb and Bill Frye were also on the move toward the front. Collins, Erb and Frye were locked into a battle for the second spot and Korte soon joined them to make it a four car battle. However, Korte would soon dispose of all three and take over the second spot and begin his attempt to hunt down Vaught. However, Vaught worked a smooth line around the bottom and never allowed Korte to get any closer than half straight-away to him. Vaught took the checkered flag as the event went all forty laps without a caution. Korte would cross the line second with Dennis Erb taking the third spot. Bill Frye would claim the fourth spot with Collins rounding out the top five. In the UMP DIRTcar Modified main event, Rusty Griffaw led the first eighteen laps of the twenty-five lap main event before being overtaken by former NASCAR driver Kenny Schrader. Griffaw used the very bottom of the track to pace the field while Paul Bauman used the middle of the track to challenge him early on. On lap twelve, Matt Mevert moved in on Griffaw and got under Griffaw going into turn one. However, Mevert couldn't hold the line on the bottom and Griffaw powered used a cross over move to power back past Mevert exiting turn two. Mevert then moved up to the middle of the track and raced door to door with Griffaw for several laps before they encountered lapped traffic. As the two got hung up in lapped traffic, Schrader used the high side that was clear of lapped cars to make his move into the lead. Mevert would get past Griffaw in the lapped traffic as well and proceeded to battle with Schrader for the lead in the closing laps. Mevert could get his front wheel to Schrader's rear quarter panel but could get no closer and Schrader took the victory. Mevert would finish a close second with Griffaw third. Tim Hancock would take the fourth spot with Mark Miner rounding out the top five. Kevin Mosier claimed his first ever UMP DIRTcar/AARA Sportsman feature win at I-55 Raceway. Mosier, who started in the fifth spot, used the low side to move past early leader Jeff Herzog. With the field all bunched together, the top ten or twelve cars ran together in a pack for most of the event providing a great race. Mosier would hold off the challenges to pick up the win. Herzog would finish a very close second with Danny Ems along side him taking the third spot. Trey Harris took the fourth spot with Troy Medley completing the top five.
