Voigt, Horton, Herzog & Fisher take victories at I-55 Raceway!

Pevely, MO (June 6, 2009) Mark Voigt of Marine, Illinois brought home the victory in the UMP Super Late Model division. Billy Laycock, also from Marine, Illinois took the lead from the front row pole starting spot and proceeded to lead the first ninteen laps of the main event with Voigt on his rear bumper the entire time. Voigt began working the middle groove and raced Laycock side-by-side for a couple of laps before finally completing the pass. Laycock would finish second. Tim Ratajczyk had a strong run as he finished in the third position. Jeff Johns would take the fourth spot as he held off the challenges of Bryan Collins who took fifth. In one of the most exciting feature events of the 2009 season, Ricky Horton won by inches over Ray Walsh in the UMP Modified division. Horton led the first twelve laps before Walsh took over the lead by rim riding the high side while Horton rode the bottom. A caution would fly on lap fourteen setting up a six lap shootout for the win. With Walsh out front, he got a great restart and pulled away but the caution light would come on for a spin near the back of the field which forced another restart. On the next restart, Walsh would once again get a great restart only to have another car spin near the back of the field bringing out another caution and forcing a third restart. The third restart wasn't so good for Walsh as he banged the wall with his right rear quarter panel in turn two forcing him to slow and regather things. By that time, Horton had sped past on the low side and into the lead. Walsh gave chase and slowly reeled him back in. Walsh continued his charge on the high side and pulled even with Horton down the back-stretch on the final lap. Horton would edge ahead on the low side through turns three and four while Walsh used the momentum from the high-side to catapult himself along side Horton down the front stretch. Walsh came up just short, losing by inches to Horton at the finish line. Tim Hancock took the third spot with Bobby Bittle finishing fourth. Ken Rumble completed the top five. In the UMP/AARA Sportsman division, it looked like Jason Keller was on his way to his first win of 2009. However, his car began smoking heavily and then when the caution came out for a spin on lap six, a fire erupted under the hood of Keller's machine. Track safety crews extinguished the fire but Keller pulled onto the infield to have his crew check the oil leaking issue. That turned the lead over to Jeff Herzog who proceeded to lead the final nine circuits enroute to victory. Kevin Mosier had his best finish of 2009 as he came home second. Ronnie Bader took the third spot with Jimmy Cummins fourth. Brad Paquet rounded out the top five.
