Clint Smith, Bobby Martintoni & Robbie Eilers take I-55 Raceway Pepsi Nationals Victories!

Clint Smith CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOS FROM I-55 RACEWAY Pevely, MO (September 15, 2007) What do you get when you have a cool, crisp Missouri evening, spectacular track preperation, a pit area packed with 133 racecars, and a standing room only crowd? Answer: The 25th Annual Pepsi Nationals at I-55 Raceway that will have people talking for a long time! The World of Outlaw Late Model Series combined with the UMP DIRTcar Late Models were the headline event. Thirty-nine drivers from twelve different states signed in to compete for the $10,000 top prize. Steve Francis got the night started by setting fast time in qualifying with a lap of 12.377 seconds around the 1/3 mile high bank oval for an average lap speed of 96.857 miles per hour. Josh Richards claimed the first of four qualifying heat races as he topped Steve Francis, Chub Frank and Billy Moyer. The second heat race was won by Randy Korte over Jimmy Mars, Brian Shirley and Ron McQuerry. The third heat race went to Clint Smith as he topped Shannon Babb, Matt Miller and Will Vaught. The fourth and final heat was won by Brian Birkhofer over Darrell Lanigan, Shane Clanton and Rick Eckert. The two last chance consolation races were won by Michael Kloos and Brady Smith. Local favorite Randy Korte of Highland, Illinois started on the pole for the main event, but it was fast qualifier Steve Francis that jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green flag from the outside front row. Steve Francis' lead was short lived as Randy Korte would move past Steve Francis after just a few laps and set a blistering pace. Clint Smith would soon work his way past Steve Francis to move into the second position. Clint Smith would chase Randy Korte for the next twenty laps as Chub Frank and Shannon Babb began working their way towards the front. With about fifteen laps to go, Smith moved past Randy Korte to take the lead. Clint Smith would open up a fairly comfortable margin over Korte until the caution flew with just three laps remaining. On the restart, Shannon Babb found a very fast line and went front fifth to second in one lap. Shannon Babb was able to pull along side Clint Smith for the lead as they battled on the final lap. But Clint Smith powered through turns three and four to hold off Shannon Babb and earn the victory. Randy Korte crossed the line just a half-car length behind Shannon Babb to finish third. Chub Frank would finish in the fourth spot with Steve Francis rounding out the top five. A stellar field of fifty UMP DIRTcar Modifieds were on hand to battle for the $1,000 top prize. It was Bobby Martintoni of Livingston, Illinois putting on a dominating performance. Martintoni led all thirty laps of the main event enroute to the victory. The action was all behind him as no less than five cars battled and swapped around the second position. Ray Walsh charged through the field to finish in the second position after starting near mid pack. Walsh put on a great show as he used the high side to move up through the field. Matt Mevert crossed the line in third with Scott Weber finishing fourth and the 2007 I-55 Raceway modified track champion, Bobby Bittle finished fifth. Robbie Eilers of Highland, Illinois made a spectacular late race charge to earn the victory in the UMP DIRTcar Sportsman division. Nathan Schmitt led the early laps before 2007 I-55 Raceway sportsman track champion Troy Naeger took over the lead. Naeger led until the closing laps when Eilers found a fast line around the top to take over the lead. Eilers went on to lead the final two laps and earn the victory. Naeger crossed the line second with Jimmy Cummins taking third. Schmitt took fourth with Paul Bauman rounding out the top five.
