PHOTOS FROM I-55 RACEWAY Pevely, MO (July 22, 2006) The UMP Late Model division provided the fans with one of the most exciting feature events of the 2006 season at I-55 Raceway. The opening lap got off to a rough start as Brent Kreke got upside down in turn three and his car ended up it's roof and on top of Mark Hunter's car. Kreke and Hunter were both okay and Hunter was able to restart the main event. Once the green flag fell again, five drivers battled for the lead for the entire twenty-five laps of the main event. Brian Shirley took the lead on the opening lap from the pole position but Ed Dixon and Steve Sheppard battled nearly three wide on the opening lap. Some contact on the opening lap between Dixon and Sheppard left Dixon with a flat tire which Dixon was able to get fixed on a lap one caution. However, he had to restart the main event at the tail of the field with twenty-four laps remaining. On the next restart Matt Taylor moved in to challenge Shirley for the top spot along with Bryan Collins, Tim Ratajczyk and Sheppard. Billy Faust soon joined the war at the front of the pack making it six cars fighting for the lead. They battle two and even three wide for much of the event. Meanwhile, Dixon was barnstorming through the field as he worked his say back toward the leaders. As the race began to reach the closing stages, Shirley found the best line through lapped traffic and held on to earn the win. Bryan Collins edged out the other competitors and took the second position. Matt Taylor came home third, Steve Sheppard was fourth and Billy Faust fifth. Ed Dixon came all the way back to a sixth place finish. The UMP Modified main event was shaping up to be much the same as the UMP Late Models, except Mike Harrison decided to let everyone else fight it out for the second position. Harrison took the lead at the drop of the green flag and the only time anyone else could get close to him was under the caution. Bobby Bittle, Scott Weber and Ray Wagner fought it out for most of the twenty-laps for the second position. But late in the race, Eric Mabery found the fast way around the track and began picking off car after car working his way toward the front of the field. Harrison went on to earn the win, Bittle was able to pull away from the pack as well in the final couple of laps and he earned the second spot. Mabery's great run through the field earned him a third place finish. Scott Weber came home fourth and Ray Wagner completed the top five. Troy Naeger earned the win in the UMP Sportsman division, but he had to hold off three different drivers throughout the event. First it was Mike Nicholson that applied the pressure for the top spot with Naeger, then Paul Bauman moved into the second spot and then was able to pull along side Naeger one a couple of occassions for the top spot. But after a caution, it was Troy Medley who moved into the second spot and began pressuring Naeger for the lead. But Naeger held his cool and the lead for the remaining laps and went on to victory. Medley came through with a second place finish and Bauman took third. Nicholson came home in the fourth spot and Ronnie Bader rounded out the top five. Jason Crump held off Trey Harris as the two battled the entire distance in the AARA Pro 4 Stock division. Conrad Miner took the third position and Brad Smith and Brad Almond filled out the top five.
