CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOS FROM I-55 RACEWAY Pevely, MO (June 10, 2006) Mother Nature provided the fireworks as lightning lit up the sky all around I-55 Raceway throughout the night as big thunderstorms rolled through the metro St. Louis area all evening. But the storms stayed just north of the speedway as heavy rains were reported as close as Arnold, MO (approximately 10 miles north). It never even sprinkled at the track and the entire program was completed. Brian Collins of Elsberry, MO won his second UMP Late Model main event of the season at I-55 Raceway. Collins slipped past early leader Steve Sheppard on lap six when Sheppard's car jumped the cushion in turn two and made slight contact with the outside retaining wall. Collins would lead the rest of the way as Sheppard gave chase. Sheppard could draw up close to Collins at times, but Collins worked the lapped traffic flawlessly to take the win. The race had only two cautions with the first coming immediately after the race started when pole sitter Steve Sheppard and outside front row started Matt Taylor got together in turn one sending Taylor into the outside wall and ending his night before one lap was even completed. The second caution came on lap one when Ken Rumble and Scott Gaeshel got together coming out of turn four. Rumble made hard contact with the outside wall and ended his night early. Billy Faust and Danny Haynes battled relentlessly for the third position throughout the main event. Faust would claim the third position in the end as Haynes settled for the fourth position. Ed Dixon made a nice charge through the field to bring home a top five finish. Highland, IL's Mike Harrison claimed his fourth feature win of 2006 at I-55 Raceway. Harrison was able to keep his perfect string of victories going as he has won every main event that he has run at I-55 Raceway this season. Harrison started on the outside of the front row and took command from the start. Ray Walsh worked his way into the second position on lap two and ran down Harrison. Walsh would battle Harrison for several laps, even pulling along side him through the turns, but couldn't complete the pass. Walsh soon found trouble as he jumped the cushion and made contact with the outside wall causing something to break on his car which sent him spinning in turn four and ended his night. Tom Ratajczyk made a consistant run along the low side and although he couldn't run down Harrison, he came home in the second position. Ricky Horton had his best run of the 2006 season as he claimed the third spot. Eric Mabery, who had won his qualifying heat and the dash brought his car home in the fourth spot. I-55 Raceway Modified point leader Bobby Bittle took the fifth spot after being as high as third late in the race. He also found himself jumping the big cushion and making some contact with the wall, which led to a couple of cars passing him late in the race. Troy Naeger's awesome racing season continued as he won his sixth feature event this year. A huge crash on the opening lap occurred on the front stretch involving no less than a dozen cars. Seven of those cars were unable to continue with some suffering heavy damage. Scott Honer was briefly knocked unconscious in the accident, but after just a couple of minutes he climbed out of his car on his own and refused further medical treatment. Once the action got restarted, Naeger pulled away to a commanding lead early on, but a caution with three laps remaining tightened the field and Mike Nicholson made it interesting in the final shootout at the end. Nicholson couldn't quiet find his way around Naeger and brought his car across the line in the second position. Chuck Adams claimed the third position with Jeff LeBaube and Paul Bauman completing the top five. Tray Harris claimed another victory in the AARA Pro 4 Stock division. Harris held off a late charge from Chris Fisher for the win. Jason Crump took the third spot with Mike McMullin and Tim Hoffman rounding out the top five.
