PHOTOS FROM I-55 RACEWAY Pevely, MO (May 28, 2005) Brian Shirley captured the UMP Late Model victory in his first visit of 2005 to I-55 Raceway. It appeared that pole sitter Tim Ratajczyk was well on his way to victory as he led the first 21 laps of the main event and had a comfortable lead until he tangled with the lapped car of Nick Bauman. Ratajczyk's car ended up on top of Bauman's car as they got together in turn four as Ratajczyk attempted the pass on the low side. Ratajczyk was able to restart after the incident, but had to go to the rear of the field on the restart. Bauman was treated for what appeared to be a shoulder injury in the incident. Shirley was able to power his way to the win after the restart. Jeff Johns took the second position, while Justin Allgaier claimed third. The UMP Late Model National Point Leader Rodney Melvin finished fourth and Ed Dixon completed the top five. Mark Miner became the first driver to repeat in the UMP Modified division as he claimed his second feature event of 2005. Miner and Brian Wolfmeier battled side by side lap after lap during the final ten circuits. Miner was able to power ahead down each straight away as he used his momentum around the top and Wolfmeier would pull even using the low side through each turn. Wolfmeier would have to settle for a close second. Tom Ratajczyk held off last week's feature winner Dennis Richards to claim third. Eric Mabry followed Richards across the line to claim fifth. Brian Worley took home the Missouri/Illinois Dodge Dealers Hard Charger Award as he passed the most cars in the main event. Mike Nicholson won his first ever AARA Sportsman main event at I-55 Raceway in a wild and crazy last lap turn of events. Troy Naeger appeared to be on his way to victory when he blew the right front tire as he came out of turn four to take the white flag. As he went into turn one, the second place car of Paul Belken made contact with Naeger causing both cars to lose momentum and allowing the third place car of Nicholson to shoot past and into the lead. Belken recovered and was in second as they came down the back straightaway but then he spun in turn four which caused another scramble for position. Chuck Adams weaved his way through the incident and took the second position. Paul Bauman recovered from a crash early in the main event and took third. Troy Naeger was still able to take fourth with the flat tire. Jason Keller completed the top five. Scott Geary made a late race pass on Homer Mooney to pick up the win in the AARA Pro 4 Stocks. Jason Crump took third.
