Pevely, MO (April 3, 2004) The 2004 racing season got off to a great start at the I-55 Raceway. Randy Korte of Highland, IL put on a dominating performance in the U.M.P. Late Model division. Korte brought out the broom and swept the night's events. Korte moved underneath Kevin Gundaker and took the lead on lap two and went on to victory. Justin Allgaier recovered from a bad showing in his qualifying heat and worked his way up from starting deep in the field to finish second. Mark Voigt battled all twenty-five laps with Kevin Gundaker and Ed Dixon as they traded positions in the top five throughout the entire event. All three drivers were running different lines around the track for most of the event. Dixon was on the top, bouncing off the outside wall almost every lap while Voigt used the middle line and Gundaker paced around the bottom. Voigt came out ahead and took the third spot while Gundaker claimed fourth. Danny Haynes moved into the battle and took fifth from Dixon, Dixon settled for sixth. Wisconsin native Brett Sievert looked to be a threat as he finished third in the dash, but the something broke in the right front suspension before the feature race began and he missed the start of the event as his crew attempted to make the necessary repairs. Mark Oller spun on the opening lap of the main event and collected Clay Baumann. Baumann's car suffered significant damage and wasn't able to continue. Oller was able to restart the event, but his nighted ended a few laps later as the damage from the crash apparantly caused problems. Brian Wolfmeier picked up the opening night victory in the U.M.P. Modified division. Wolfmeier moved past early leader Bobby Bittle and then held off Bittle's challenges and took the win. Bittle took second. Jim Shereck had a strong showing and took the third position. Ray Walsh raced through the field as he moved up from the twenty-first starting position to claim fourth. Dean Hoffman rounded out the top five. Troy Naeger won a very exciting AARA Sportsman feature. Naeger battled all fifteen laps with Paul Bauman and Paul Belken. All three drivers swapped the lead several times before Naeger finally took the win. Bauman claimed second and Belken was third. Bob Schmidt took home fourth and Mike Nicholson completed the top five. Dave Heinrichs dominated the AARA Pro 4 Stock class. He swept the night's events and won the feature handily over second place finisher Homer Mooney. Pat Brewer was third.
