Pevely, MO (August 23, 2003) One hundred and five race cars filled the pit area on a near perfect Saturday evening at I-55 Raceway. Twenty-nine U.M.P. Late Models signed in including a rare visit by Randy Korte who had a brand new C.J. Rayburn Late Model that he and his crew put together this week, they didn't even have time to get the car lettered, therefore he just had a yellow X on the side of the car. It was Korte who took the spotlight as he took the lead on the opening lap of the twenty-five lap main event. Korte, who started on the outside of the front row along side Ed Dixon, used the cushion along the top to establish a big lead early. Dixon grabbed the second spot and moved to the top to chase Korte, but he had to contend with Justin Allgaier who moved up to battle with him for the second spot. The action was slowed on the eleventh circuit when Billy Laycock got turned around coming out of turn four. Korte jumped out to a comfortable lead again on the restart, leaving Dixon to battle with Allgaier for second. But the green was only out for a couple of laps before a spin in turn one by Rich Lawson slowed the pace. On the final restart Dixon made a brief challenge for the lead on the low side, but Korte powered back past Dixon using the high side. Korte went on to take the victory. Dixon held of Allgaier for second. Marc McClintock continues to run strong since taking over the Chuck Baird entry a few weeks ago as he finished fourth. Brian Wolfmeier brought home the Bargetzi Racing owned machine in the fifth spot. Scott Weber has put on some impressive performances in the U.M.P. Modified division throughout the past few years, but this may have been his most spectacular performance yet. Weber had to start twenty-first in the feature event after mechanical problems forced him to miss his qualifying heat and then he took a third place finish in the semi-feature. Weber rocketed through an strong field of modifieds and took the lead from Rich Whaley on lap thirteen. Weber then pulled away to a comfortable win. Eric Mabery made a last lap pass on Whaley to take the second spot. Brian Worley followed Whaley across the line to take fourth and Ray Walsh continues his march to the track championship in the modified division with his fifth place finish. The AARA Sportsman division kept the fans on their feet as Ricky Horton and Paul Belken battled side-by-side the entire fifteen laps of the main event. Meanwhile, Scott Stuppy, Darren Holland and Bob Prince battled two and three wide the entire race for the third spot. Horton earned his second victory of the season as he held off Belken. Stuppy edged out Holland and Prince for third, with Holland taking fourth and Prince fifth. U.M.P.
