Moyer, Weber & Haynes take Pepsi Nationals Victories! Pevely, MO (September 28, 2002) Beautiful weather brought out a huge crowd to the 20th Annual I-55 Raceway Pepsi Nationals. A large field of cars were also on hand as 123 racecars were on hand. Forty-one UMP Late Models were in attendance to compete for the $10,000 top prize. Bob Pierce kicked things off by setting fast time in qualifying with a lap of 13.353 seconds around the 1/3 mile oval. Billy Moyer earned the pole position in the main event by leading all ten laps and winning the dash. Pierce was second, Ken Schrader third and Don O'Neal fourth. Dave Jumper picked up the win in the first of four heat races. Bret Sievert was a close second and Brent Slocum third Mark Oller took the second heat, with sixteen year old Justin Allgaier finishing second and Billy Faust was third. UMP Late Model National Point Leader Terry English took the third heat, with Shannon Babb second and Danny Haynes third. The fourth heat went to Brian Birkhofer, who edged out Mark Burgtorf by a nose. Third went to Roger Long. Todd Rehg and Johnny Johnson took the last chance qualifiers. The 40 lap UMP Late Model feature got off to a fast start as Billy Moyer jumped out to the lead early from the pole position. Bob Pierce battled Moyer early until the caution flew on lap eight as Brian Wolfmeier found the wall in turn four. On the restart, Moyer immediately jumped back out front with Pierce taking second and Schrader third. The battle raged on as they raced through lapped traffic until the caution flew for a second time on lap 22 as Terry English came to a stop with a flat tire. Moyer once again showed his dominance as he pulled away on the restart, leaving Pierce to battle Schrader and Ed Dixon for second. The final caution would fly on lap 28 as Brian Birkhofer spun in turn one after taking the fourth spot from Ed Dixon. Moyer once again pulled away and went on to take the win. Bob Pierce was second, Ken Schrader third, Ed Dixon fourth and Bret Sievert rounded out the top five. Kevin Weaver led the final eight laps of the special dash, picking up $2000 for his efforts. Scott Weber held off the challenge of Jim Shereck to win his fourth straight I-55 Pepsi Nationals Title in the UMP Modified division.
