PEVELY, MO (July 14, 2001) A packed house greeted the Pennzoil World of Outlaws on their second visit this season to I-55 Raceway. Then the Outlaws treated the fans to a great race and a thrilling finish. Joey Saldana of Brownsburg, IN and Steve Kinser of Bloomington, IN started on the front row of the A-Main. Kinser jumped out to the early lead. On lap twelve, Saldana took the lead away from Kinser by taking advantage of lapped traffic. Kinser was able to wrestle the lead back from Saldana on lap twenty-one as they battled through more lapped traffic. Saldana?s luck ran out on the thirty-third lap, as flat tire would end his hope for victory. That allowed Stevie Smith of New Oxford, PA to move into second place. Smith stayed right on Kinser?s bumper until the last lap, when Smith dove under Kinser entering turn 3, forcing Kinser up the track and took the win. Donny Schatz worked his way through traffic to finish third. Tim Shaffer and Paul McMahon rounded out the top five. Mark Kinser was sixth, Danny Lasoski seventh with Danny Wood, Brad Furr and Jac Haudenschild completing the top ten. Smith, Wood and Saldana won the qualifying heats and Saldana also won the dash. Shaffer set fast time with a 10.989 second lap. The UMP Modified feature got off to a great start as Jeff LeBaube used the high side to go from his second row starting position to take the lead going into the first turn of the first lap. LeBaube led the first six laps before Scott Weber was able to get underneath him and take the lead. Weber led until lap fourteen, when Weber and Dean Hoffman made contact and Weber spun. Rusty Griffaw assumed the lead and pulled away to pick up his second victory of the season at I-55 Raceway. Hoffman was second and Ray Wagner worked his way through traffic to finished third. LeBaube ended up fourth and Tim Meara was fifth. Weber, Hoffman and Griffaw won the heat races and Weber also won the dash. World of Outlaws: O'REILLY AUTO PARTS HEAT 1 10 Laps 1. Stevie Smith, 2.
