Dixon Dominates at I-55!

Pevely, MO (June 1, 2002)Scorching temperatures invaded I-55 Raceway today as the thermometer pushed into the mid 90s. The action on the track was just as hot between the twenty-five UMP Late Models that signed in the gate.

Ed Dixon started off the night just like he finished last week, by running away with the first qualifying heat. Dave Jumper and Mark Oller completed the top three. Tim Ratajczyk cruised to victory in the second heat over Jason Frankel and Brian Wolfmeier. The third heat saw Danny Haynes hold off the outstanding youngster Justin Allgaier. Third went to John Bohn. Dixon also went on to win the dash by besting Haynes and Ratajczyk.

Dixon continued his hot streak in the feature. He pulled out to a huge lead early on; placing five lapped cars between him and second place Ratajczyk when the first caution came out on lap six. As Dixon pulled away to another big lead, the battle was on for second place, Oller moved up to take second on lap ten. Ratajczyk, Matt Taylor, Billy Faust and Allgaier battled through lapped traffic for third. On the sixteenth lap, Oller had front suspension problems and his car took a hard left turn coming down the front straight, directly in front of a large pack of cars. Incredibly, all the cars took evasive action and were able to miss OllerÂ’s car as it crossed the entire track and came to rest sideways on the front stretch. On the final restart, Dixon once again pulled away and went on to victory. Taylor made a last lap pass on Ratajczyk to claim second. Faust came home fourth and Allgaier fifth.

In the UMP Modified division, Rich Whaley also picked right up where he left off last week. Whaley held off fierce challenges from Dean Hoffman, Scott Weber and Tom Ratajczyk to complete the sweep. These four drivers battled all twenty laps of the main event for the lead and finished in that order. Ray Wagner completed the top five.

Paul Belken jumped out to an early lead in the AARA Sportsman division feature. Belken appeared to be on his way to an easy victory when a late race caution bunched the field. That allowed Dan Dixon move up and battle side-by-side with Belken for the final two laps. But Dixon jumped the cushion in turn four on the final lap allowing Belken to grab the win. Dixon was second, Mark Blanke third, Todd McGraw fourth and last weeks winner Ricky Horton came home fifth.
