Danny Smith & Ed Dixon take Open Wheel Wednesday Honors! Pevely, MO (June 12, 2002) Severe thunderstorms rolled through I-55 Raceway on Monday and Tuesday and were forecast for Wednesday, putting a big question mark on whether the Open Wheel Wednesday show would even be run. But the only thunder on Wednesday at I-55 Raceway was provided by the racecars on the track. The action on the track kept the fans on their feet. Four different drivers swapped the lead nine times in the twenty-five lap sprint car feature. Bobby Hawks jumped out to the early lead and lead until the caution came out on lap ten. On the restart, Joey Montgomery, Tommy Worley and Danny Smith moved up and challenged for the lead. Hawks began to fade, and Montgomery and Smith swapped the lead several times in the closing laps with Worley close behind. Then on lap twenty-two, Montgomery …

June 8, 2002 Results

Ratajczyk Roars to Victory at I-55! Pevely, MO (June 8, 2002) A near perfect evening for racing brought out a huge crowd and a lot of cars to I-55 Raceway. One hundred twenty one cars came through the gates to challenge the high banks including the current UMP National Late Model Point leader Terry English. Current track point leader Tim Ratajczyk kicked things off in the UMP Late Model division by besting Mark Oller and Dave Jumper in the first heat. In the second heat, Terry English worked his way from a last row starting spot to claim the win. Billy Faust was second and Don Klein third. In the third heat, Jim Durbin pulled away and picked up the win over Mark Burgtorf and Clay Baumann. Terry English jumped out front and handily won the dash over Jim Durbin and Tim Ratajczyk. Dixon Dominates at I-55! Pevely, MO (June 1, 2002)Scorching temperatures invaded I-55 Raceway today as the thermometer pushed into the mid 90s. The action on the track was just as hot between the twenty-five UMP Late Models that signed in the gate. Ed Dixon started off the night just like he finished last week, by running away with the first qualifying heat. Dave Jumper and Mark Oller completed the top three. Tim Ratajczyk cruised to victory in the second heat over Jason Frankel and Brian Wolfmeier. The third heat saw Danny Haynes hold off the outstanding youngster Justin Allgaier. Third went to John Bohn. Dixon also went on to win the dash by besting Haynes and Ratajczyk. Dixon continued his hot streak in the feature. May 25, 2002 Results

Dixon Powers to First Win at I-55 this Season! I-55 Raceway finally reopened after flooding had caused the racing to be cancelled for two consecutive weeks. A mild beautiful evening with a full moon greeted fans and racers and the action on the track was fast. In UMP Late Model action, Mark Oller jumped out to the early lead in the first heat race and held off a hard charging Dean Motsinger. Billy Laycock came home third and Dwayne Kiefer was fourth. In the second heat, Ed Dixon set the tone as the man to beat as he pulled away to the victory. Danny Haynes, Tim Ratajczyk and Justin Allgaier completed the top four. Dixon's dominance continued in the dash as he jumped out front and pulled away. Oller, Ratajczyk and Haynes battled fiercly for second and finished in that order. “King Kong” Korte Sweeps Up at I-55! PEVELY, MO (May 4, 2002) Randy “King Kong” Korte took advantage of an off night on the UDTRA circuit to come back to his old stomping ground and sweep the UMP Late Model division. Korte started the feature from the pole after winning his heat and the dash and took advantage by jumping out to the early lead. Chuck Baird was the big mover early on as he moved up from his seventh place starting spot to take over second place just three laps into the race. Baird was unable to post a serious challenge to Korte for the lead and then Billy Faust was able to move past Baird into second. Faust was able to get a nose under Korte a few times for the lead, but it was the teenage sensation Justin Allgaier that made a late race charge to the …

Oller, Hoffman & Stuppy Roll to Victory! PEVELY, MO (April 13, 2002) A field of twenty-nine UMP Late Models rolled into the pit area ready for action and it was action they provided. Mark Oller took control of the first heat from his pole starting position and held off a hard charging Billy Faust. Jeff Johns in his brand new Rayburn car finished third. The second heat saw John Bohn jump out to the early lead with Ed Dixon right on his heels. Dixon worked the high side and finally made the pass with 4 laps remaining. Dixon charged on to victory and Cody Hupp worked his way through the field to finish second. Bohn held on to finish third. Ratajczyk Roars to Victory on Opening Night! PEVELY, MO (April 6, 2002) I-55 Raceway opened the 2002 regular season with a full field of cars on a cool crisp night. Twenty-five of the top UMP Late Model drivers were on hand and provided another great night of racing. The opening qualifying heat saw Tim Ratajczyk jump out front and pull away to victory over Danny Haynes and Brett Sievert. The second heat saw Jim Durbin and Billy Laycock battle for the lead early on, but Laycock spun late in the race giving second place to Chuck Baird with Brian Wolfmeier coming home third. Billy Faust grabbed the victory in the third heat over Mark Oller and Kevin Gundaker. Tim Ratajczyk continued to impress in the dash. ‘Wild Child’ Wins I-55 Feature By Richard Day PEVELY, MO (March 30) -– Brad Furr’s misfortune turned into Jac Haudenschild’s first victory in 1 1/3 years Saturday as a record crowd packed I-55 Raceway. Furr was a straightaway ahead of Haudenschild when the caution flag flew with nine laps remaining in the “A” Feature. After the #2 Sanmina/ISC Eagle suffered a blown engine during the caution period, “The Wild Child” restarted ahead of the field and beat early leader Tyler Walker under the checkered flag by a straightaway. It was Haudenschild’s first victory in a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main event since July 22, 2000, at I-55 Raceway. “Brad (Furr) got by me there, then he lost a motor, so that was bad luck for him,” Haudenschild said. “It was pretty tough out there — the track was fast all night long. “This Wirtgen car’s been running good lately. …

Moyer claims I-55 Pepsi Nationals Title! PEVELY, MO (September 15, 2001) Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas earned his fifth Pepsi Nationals title on Saturday night at the I-55 Raceway and claimed $10,000 for picking up the win. The win came in his sponsors’ backyard as he drove the Petroff Towing, B AUTO Parts, J&J Steel, Hoosier Tire, AFCO, C.J. Rayburn, Jay Dickens FORD powered #21 to victory lane. The night was kicked off with a very emotional tribute to the victims in New York, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon. Drivers and crews formed a complete circle around the speedway, all holding candles while God Bless the USA played in the background. I-55 Raceway collected over $6300 in donations from fans, sponsors and crews to donate to the American Red Cross. I-55 Raceway’s 2001 UMP Late Model Champion Ed Dixon set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 13.398 seconds. The …

Gundaker grabs win, Dixon claims Championship at I-55! Weber & Belken also crowned as Champions! PEVELY, MO (September 8, 2001) The 2001 UMP Late Model season championship came down to the wire on the final night of points, with four drivers still with a chance to take the title. Ed Dixon came in as the point leader holding a 43-point lead over Mark Oller who was three points ahead of Kevin Gundaker and twelve points ahead of Tim Ratajczyk. Tension and nerves were high at the start of the feature, which resulted in seven cautions in the first three laps of the feature for various spins and crashes including a hard crash by Randy Korte into the back stretch wall. One of those cautions was for point leader Dixon, who slowed with what he thought was suspension problems but turned out to be excessive mud in his right side wheels. …
