Moyer claims I-55 Pepsi Nationals Title! PEVELY, MO (September 15, 2001) Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas earned his fifth Pepsi Nationals title on Saturday night at the I-55 Raceway and claimed $10,000 for picking up the win. The win came in his sponsors’ backyard as he drove the Petroff Towing, B AUTO Parts, J&J Steel, Hoosier Tire, AFCO, C.J. Rayburn, Jay Dickens FORD powered #21 to victory lane. The night was kicked off with a very emotional tribute to the victims in New York, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon. Drivers and crews formed a complete circle around the speedway, all holding candles while God Bless the USA played in the background. I-55 Raceway collected over $6300 in donations from fans, sponsors and crews to donate to the American Red Cross. I-55 Raceway’s 2001 UMP Late Model Champion Ed Dixon set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 13.398 seconds. The …

Gundaker grabs win, Dixon claims Championship at I-55! Weber & Belken also crowned as Champions! PEVELY, MO (September 8, 2001) The 2001 UMP Late Model season championship came down to the wire on the final night of points, with four drivers still with a chance to take the title. Ed Dixon came in as the point leader holding a 43-point lead over Mark Oller who was three points ahead of Kevin Gundaker and twelve points ahead of Tim Ratajczyk. Tension and nerves were high at the start of the feature, which resulted in seven cautions in the first three laps of the feature for various spins and crashes including a hard crash by Randy Korte into the back stretch wall. One of those cautions was for point leader Dixon, who slowed with what he thought was suspension problems but turned out to be excessive mud in his right side wheels. …

September 1, 2001 Results

Gundaker, Weber & Naeger win at I-55! PEVELY, MO (September 1, 2001) Kevin Gundaker held off the challenges of Jason Frankel and Ed Dixon to pick up his second consecutive UMP Late Model victory at I-55 Raceway. Gundaker, who started on the pole, led all twenty-five laps to claim the win. Frankel pressured Gundaker the entire race but couldn’t make the pass and settled for second. Dixon ran down the leaders late in the race but he ran out of time and finished third. Steve Shive came home fourth and Jim Durbin moved up to finish fifth from his fourteenth starting spot. In the UMP Modified division, Scott Weber continued to march toward his second straight season championship at I-55 Raceway. Rich Whaley was able to pull along side of Weber with two laps to go but had to settle for second. Brent Mullins was third, Dan Schlup fourth and …

Gundaker Shoots Down the Competition at I-55! PEVELY, MO (August 18, 2001) Mother Nature scattered heavy rain all around the area, but not a single drop fell on I-55 Raceway. As lightning lit up the sky in the background, the UMP Late Models provided the thunder on the racetrack. Ed Dixon took advantage of his front row starting position to jump out to the early lead. Kevin Gundaker moved past Tim Ratajczyk and took over second place on lap four. Matt Taylor then moved up to challenge Gundaker on low side but the caution flew as Dean Motsinger found the wall in turn one. On the restart, Gundaker took to the low side and moved past Dixon to take the lead. Gundaker, Dixon and Taylor battled two and three wide for the next several laps. Clay Baumann moved into the mix to make it a four-car battle for the lead. …

August 11, 2001 Results

Dixon, Griffaw & Belken Victorious at I-55! PEVELY, MO (August 11, 2001) Kevin Gundaker jumped out to the early lead in the UMP Late Model division, leaving Clay Baumann, Ed Dixon and Danny Haynes to battle for second. Gundaker appeared to have things well under control when the caution came out on lap eleven for a crash involving points leader Mark Oller, Dave Jumper, Donnie Klein and Tim Ratajczyk. Ratajczyk was the only one of the four involved that was able to continue. While driving around the track under the caution for this accident, race leader Gundaker’s right rear wheel broke off the car and ended his night. That turned the lead over to Dixon who went on and won his third straight feature at I-55 Raceway. Haynes and Baumann battled side-by-side for second with Haynes holding on to take the spot. Dixon, Weber, Belken & Griffin grab wins! PEVELY, MO (August 4, 2001) Just one week after claiming his 500th feature win of his career at I-55 Raceway, Ed Dixon of Washington, MO dominated the UMP Late Model feature event to pick up his second straight win at I-55 Raceway and his 502nd of his career. Dixon started on the outside of the front row and led all twenty-five laps to pick up the victory. Mark Oller, Kevin Gundaker and Steve Shive battled side-by-side for second spot. Each took turns holding on to the second spot before Gundaker was able to take control and finish second. Oller came home third with Shive and Tim Ratajczyk completing the top five. Dixon Delivers 500 at I-55! PEVELY, MO (July 28, 2001) Ed Dixon of Washington, MO reached a huge milestone in the UMP Late Model class by winning his 500th career feature. Dixon held off attempts by three different drivers that tried to take the win away. Early in the race, Chuck Baird battled side-by-side with Dixon, and then it was Danny Maguire’s turn. Maguire pulled along side Dixon several times before he spun coming out of turn four with nine laps remaining. That gave Tim Ratajczyk the opportunity to take the lead away, but Dixon held him off for the final nine laps and picked up the victory. Ratajczyk held off Kevin Gundaker for second. Dave Jumper and Billy Faust rounded out the top five. Dixon’s 500th feature win came on the fifteen-year anniversary of Don Klein’s 500th feature win. Klein, who had won his 555th feature just the night …

Oller Out Duels Tough Field at I-55! PEVELY, MO (July 21, 2001) The UMP Late Models provided another great night of action at I-55 Raceway. Danny Haynes and Mark Oller started on the front row of a stellar field of late models. Oller, of Highland, IL, jumped out to the early lead, but the race was halted on the second lap when Danny Maguire and Bill Masters made contact on the front straight. Maguire got into the wall and then went upside down. Maguire was able to walk away uninjured. The race resumed with Oller leading the way until Kevin Gundaker made the pass for the lead on the eighth lap. Gundaker, Oller and Haynes battled two and three wide for the lead for several laps. Haynes took the lead on lap fifteen and appeared to be on his way to victory, but Oller made the pass for the lead …

PEVELY, MO (July 14, 2001) A packed house greeted the Pennzoil World of Outlaws on their second visit this season to I-55 Raceway. Then the Outlaws treated the fans to a great race and a thrilling finish. Joey Saldana of Brownsburg, IN and Steve Kinser of Bloomington, IN started on the front row of the A-Main. Kinser jumped out to the early lead. On lap twelve, Saldana took the lead away from Kinser by taking advantage of lapped traffic. Kinser was able to wrestle the lead back from Saldana on lap twenty-one as they battled through more lapped traffic. Saldana’s luck ran out on the thirty-third lap, as flat tire would end his hope for victory. That allowed Stevie Smith of New Oxford, PA to move into second place. Smith stayed right on Kinser’s bumper until the last lap, when Smith dove under Kinser entering turn 3, forcing Kinser up …

Ed Dixon wins #499 at I-55! PEVELY, MO (July 7, 2001) Ed Dixon of Washington, MO claimed his 499th career feature win at I-55 Raceway. Dixon got the jump on the start of the race from the outside front row, and never looked back, leading all 25 Laps. He was able to hold off early challenges from Steve Shive and a late race challenge from points leader Mark Oller. It was Dixon’s third UMP Late Model feature win this season at I-55 Raceway. Oller came from his eleventh place starting spot to finish second. Shive was third and Jason Frankel and Tim Ratajczyk rounded out the top five. Ray Walsh picked up his first win of the season at I-55 Raceway in the UMP Modified division. Walsh dominated the event by leading all twenty laps. Six different drivers battled for second place.
