Pevely, MO (April 3, 2010) After an overnight rain, Mother Nature provided a picture perfect April evening with blue skies and sunshine with temperatures around 70 degrees in the late afternoon.
The UMP DIRTcar Modifieds got the action started. A solid field of 28 cars assembled for the UMP DIRTcar Modified action. 2009 I-55 Raceway UMP DIRTcar Modified Track Champion Tim Hancock of Mt. Olive, Illinois showed he is ready to defend that title here in 2010. Hancock took the lead on lap two and then held off some fierce challenges by Mark Miner, Rusty Griffaw and Bobby Bittle. The most serious challenge for Hancock came just past the half-way point when Mark Miner found a fast line just one groove off the bottom and pulled along side Hancock as the two raced side by side for several laps. However, a caution would interrupt that side by side battle and after the restart, Miner couldn’t make that line work anymore. In fact, he would lose ground trying to use that line as Griffaw and Bittle would both get past him. With Griffaw, Bittle and Miner battling hard for the second spot, that would allow Hancock to open just a little bit of distance in the final laps and he would take the win. Griffaw would finish second for the second straight week. Bittle would finish third with Miner crossing the line fourth. Doug Wood would complete the top five.
A big field of 35 UMP DIRTcar/AARA Sportsman were on hand. Danny Ems would claim the win over a tough field of cars. Ems used his outside front row starting position to jump out to the lead and would pace the field for the entire fifteen laps. He wouldn’t go unchallenged however as pole sitter Joe McCain stayed nailed to his rear bumper while he fought off challengers for the second spot. Trey Harris and Jeff Herzog were the big movers through the field as they raced up through the field after starting twelfth and thirteenth respectively to finish third and fourth. Kyle Stolzer would round out the top five.
In the UMP DIRTcar Late Model division, 29 cars signed in to battle on the high banked one third mile dirt oval. At the drop of the green flag, pole sitter Rickey Frankel jumped out to the early and looked very strong as he would pace the field for the first sixteen laps of the twenty-five lap main event. Bryan Collins would challenge Frankel early on and then after a couple of laps it would be Tim Manville providing the heat to Frankel for the top spot. It didn’t take long before Billy Faust, who sit out most of last season and is piloting Randy Korte’s machine while Korte fights problems with his back, to move into the second spot. Faust would then run down Frankel and provide the most pressure Frankel had seen the entire event. On lap seventeen, Faust would find his opportunity to take over the top spot as they exited turn two and raced down the back stretch while they worked lapped traffic. Faust would prove too strong and lead the final 9 laps to take the win. Frankel would suffer a flat left rear late in the event to bring a disappointing end to a great run. Mark Voigt would claim the second spot at the checkered flag while Tim Manville crossed the line in third. Brian Collins would finish fourth and the young kid from California, Tyler Reddick would complete the top five.
Jeff Turner claimed his second straight UMP DIRTcar/AARA Pro 4 Stock main event. Justin McCallister charged from the tenth starting spot to finish second as he used Jason Marquitz car after fiery engine failure in his own car during his heat race. Gerald Buechting would take the third spot with Mike McGinnity taking fourth and Ben Cochran fifth.
