“King Kong” Korte Sweeps Up at I-55!
PEVELY, MO (May 4, 2002) Randy “King Kong” Korte took advantage of an off night on the UDTRA circuit to come back to his old stomping ground and sweep the UMP Late Model division. Korte started the feature from the pole after winning his heat and the dash and took advantage by jumping out to the early lead. Chuck Baird was the big mover early on as he moved up from his seventh place starting spot to take over second place just three laps into the race. Baird was unable to post a serious challenge to Korte for the lead and then Billy Faust was able to move past Baird into second. Faust was able to get a nose under Korte a few times for the lead, but it was the teenage sensation Justin Allgaier that made a late race charge to the front that got the fans on their feet. Allgaier, who started twelfth, took over second place with six laps remaining and pulled even with Korte for the lead lap after lap. At the finish line it was Korte edging out Allgaier for the victory by less than a car-length. Faust came home third, with Danny Haynes fourth and Baird fifth. Clay Baumann and Faust won the other two heats.
Scott Weber continues to show his muscle in the UMP Modified division. Weber brought his broom as well and went on to sweep the modified division. Another teenage marvel, Kyle Steffens, kept the pressure on Weber but just didnÂ’t have enough to get past Weber and had to settle for second. Ray Wagner made it a three-way race for the lead late in the race and settled for third. Jerry Grither and Brent Mullins rounded out the top five. A twelve-car crash on the opening lap eliminated four competitors and damaged several others.
Paul Belken wouldnÂ’t be left out as he also completed the sweep in the AARA Sportsman division. The smooth tacky track allowed Belken to power his way to a commanding victory. Ricky Horton outlasted the challenges of Mark Blanke to finish second. Point leader Scott Stuppy was fourth and Dan Dixon fifth.
